Just a coupla thoughts about those coalition soldiers humiliating Iraqi prisoners: Whenever I hear about ethics in the context of war, I scratch my head. It's kind of weird, this whole Geneva Convention thing. Soldiers must be thinking, "So, we can blow the fuck out of you, but we're not allowed to hurt your feelings? WTF?" I always felt this about capital punishment, too. For instance when the electrocution of a prisoner results in flaming hair and a slightly slower death. The rule there is: You can fry 'em. Just can't toast 'em! (Of course, there are strong ethical reasons for good treatment of prisoners, which I accept. Still, it's the standup comic in me that goes for the cheap angle. I just can't help it.) Also, there's another irony at play: Predictably the squitterati is going ape shit over all this. It's confimation of Western evil and brutality. So, to them, widdling on a few guys who may well have slaughtered whole families when gainfully employed is the pure definition of barbarity. But intentionally blowing up buildings full of innocent men women and children is of course not only acceptable, but admirable. And another thought: New Age nutbjobs - who seem invariably leftist - are forever banging on about "karma". But they are so selective about invoking it. If 9/11 was karma for the Yanks, then why isn't a bit of Limey wee in the face karma for your part in the most barbaric regime on earth? Just a thought. (But of course actual thought is banned in pinko strongholds. It's been replaced by idiotic ideological dogmatism.) |
