George Bested (by the Grim Reaper)
11.25.05 (6:44 am)   [edit]
Re the death of George Best:

I really feel sorry for the poor bastard -- and his family.  Still, I can't help thinking that all the media attention over his death is more than a little excessive.

He was just a sportsman, after all.  I remember when I was a soccer freak (in my early to mid teens).  He was a legend from the distant past even then (I'm now an old fart of 41).

There were other big Pommy (and Scottish and Irish) names that come to mind.  Names like Allan Clarke and Kenny Daglish.  They were both ace strikers (now managers, I think).   But because they didn't crash and burn like Georgie, we hardly hear of them.

I also think his name had something to do with his enduring appeal.  He was arguably the best of his era, after all.  And his surname added to that reputation.  If he had a surname like Gadd, maybe he wouldn't be so memorable these days.  (On second thoughts, maybe not.)

That said, it's a strange thing, this "celebrity" ...

Bird brains suggest pool ban
11.12.05 (6:36 pm)   [edit]
Here we go.  The meddling hydro-wowsers of Waverley Council want to stop people building swimming pools on their properties. This is a kind of NIYBY-ism ("not in your backyard") and we should not accept it.

I would probably think the suggestion wasn't so bad if it was just to do with saving water.  But it's the ferndie aspect that gets my goat (or would, if I had one; I'm probably the only Satanist in Sydney without one).

Mora Main, the Mayor, has obviously had her mind poisoned by greenies:

"People need a lot of chemicals to keep pools clean and the chemicals are quite abrasive; they kill insects and then we lose bird life."

She says it like it's a bad thing.  In my opinion not only is culling birds not a bad thing, it's actually highly desirable. With a bloody pandemic of avian influenza looming, we should get rid of as many of the revolting little buggers as possible.
